Bath Iron Works, a division of General Dynamics, is located on the Kennebec River on the Maine coast. It mainly produces warships for the US Navy. and at present is building Arleigh Burke class destroyers of 9200 tons.
In the center of the picture is the huge Land Level Transfer Facility's launching and recovery drydock. Built in China for $27 million, it is 750' long and 190' wide. The ships are built of separate modules constructed in assembly halls, welded together and then moved by rail onto the drydock. When the vessel is sufficiently completed, the drydock is lowered into the river and the ship floats free.

Awesome pic! I live across the river from this place and have watched a destroyer being rolled into the dock... a slow but impressive process

We built a smaller dry dock at the boat yard I worked at for a while. This is very similar. But Ours was only 100 feet long and about 40 feet wide. Cool picture.

Thank you. I feel like sending this picture to my senator (Chuck Schumer) and asking him why this dock couldn't have been built in NY, but I think that that would be unnecessarily cruel.
