Battery Mendell 4

Base-end station at Battery Mendell. As the gunners could often not see their targets, base-end stations were located at intervals up and down the coast, some several miles apart. Two or more stations were assigned to a particular battery and housed one or two depression position finders: [IMG][link] The DPFs would be aimed at a target and its direction would be transmitted to the battery plotting room at various intervals via telephone. Along with other data such as the height of tide, curvature of the earth, wind speed and direction, ambient temperature and bore wear on the gun would be computed as elevation and azimuth (direction of fire) to the gunners. Both guns of the battery would fire at the same target and as the target moved, adjustments would be made as needed.
This station has a retractable armored cover for the vision port and appears to have living quarters for the crew at the rear.
