Handley Page Victor 1

British jet bomber built by the Handley Page Aircraft Company. First flown Christmas Eve, 1952. Introduced into Royal Air Force service in 1958 and retired in 1993. 86 built.
Aircraft had a crew of 5, a 110 foot wingspan and was 114 feet long and loaded weight was 165,000 pounds. Top speed was 650 m.p.h., but on one occasion in 1956, exceeded the speed of sound in a shallow dive. The range was 2,500 miles and service ceiling was 56,000 feet. The aircraft could carry nuclear free-fall bombs or cruise missiles and up to 35 1,000 pound bombs, two 12,000 pound "Tallboy" or one 22,000 pound "Grand Slam" bomb.
First combat service was in the Borneo conflict in 1962-6, and was used as a reconaissance aircraft and aerial tanker in the Falklands War and 1991 Gulf War.
