P-15 Termit (Styx) antiship missile.
Developed in the 1950's it has served on all types of Russian warships, from destroyers and cruisers to small PT boat sized craft. Length is 19 feet, diameter is 2 feet and the wingspan is 7 feet. It weighs 5000 pounds and carries a 1000 pound shaped-charge warhead. The range is about 50 miles and it travels 100 to 300 feet above the water to avoid radar and make it difficult to hit. The rocket engine uses a storable fuel and acid oxidizer to allow for immediate use, but the acid will corrode the fuselage if care is not taken. The guidance system utilizes an autopilot, active radar, and in some cases, infra-red sensing.
The Termit was first used in combat in 1967 by the Egyptian Navy against the Israeli destroyer Eilat, which was sunk with three hits. Later it was most effectively deployed by India against Pakistan in 1971, sinking several warships, cargo vessels and destroying an oil storage tank. Out of 11 missiles fired, only one misfired, giving a 91% success rate. The missile was also used in the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War and the 1991 Gulf War, but not as successfully.
China adopted this missile in the late 50's, and has brought out several versions, using both rocket and turbojet engines.
